Lions beat Packers 35-11 to finish up season at 9-7

01 January 2018

The Detroit Lions (8-7) host the Green Bay Packers (7-8) in the season finale at Ford Field this afternoon.

Matthew Stafford went 20-of-29 for 323 and three touchdowns. Golden Tate, Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay all caught touchdowns. Both receivers exceeded the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Caldwell is under contract through 2018 with team options beyond that, an extension he signed last offseason, but it's believed he needed to improve upon last season in order to keep his job.

Along with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was placed on injured reserve prior to last week's shutout loss to Minnesota, Green Bay played without a large chunk of its top offensive players. CB Damarious Randall, TE Richard Rodgers, G Jahri Evans and RB Aaron Jones were also inactive. Packers are up 3-0.

After an incomplete from Jeff Janis, the Packers settle for the 41-yard field goal. Their first three offensive drives showed they had no problems moving the ball down the field - nine plays, 30 yards on their first drive, eight plays, 45 yards on the second and five plays, 59 yards on the third - had it not been for costly turnovers jeopardizing potential scores. One quick stiff arm later and Golladay was gliding into the end zone for the touchdown. On Nov. 6, Detroit handled Green Bay 30-17 at Lambeau Field. It was tipped off the hands of running back Jamaal Williams and into the waiting hands of Lions linebacker Jarrad Davis.

Stafford's longest completion of the season made it 27-3 late in the third. The fourth-round rookie out of BYU was given huge workloads with Brett Hundley under center and had four games of 20-plus carries down the stretch.

The play came with the Lions leading 33-11 following an Ameer Abdullah touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Tate threw a two-point conversion pass to Stafford after Adbullah took the snap and pitched it Tate on the trick play.

The Lions also swept the Packers for the first time since 1991 and Caldwell became the first Lions coach since Buddy Parker to have three winning seasons in his first four years as head coach from 1951 to 1954.

"It wasn't our best football", McCarthy said of the finish, though it applied to other stages of the season as well. It's the first losing road record since they went 3-5 in 2010. S Don Carey left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury.
