Daughter of NYPD chokehold victim dies

31 December 2017

Garner, daughter of Black Lives Matter icon Eric Garner died in NY on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, after a weeklong hospital stay following a heart attack. We didn't deserve her. "She fought the good fight".

Following her father's death, Garner led marches in NY and elsewhere, drawing attention to the plight of African-Americans who've been victims of police brutality.

Garner was placed into a medically induced coma on December 23 after suffering a heart attack brought on by asthma.

The bakery owners made national headlines after they refused to bake a cake for Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer in February 2013. Melissa and Aaron Klein have been ordered to pay $135,000 to a lesbian couple the bakers declined to make a cake for.

The activist's death was confirmed by her family on her official Twitter account, with Garner's sister urging people to remember her as a "mother, daughter, sister and aunt".

Her father's pleas of "I can't breathe!" as he was put into a chokehold by Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo - a chokehold the NYPD had banned - helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement and spurred Erica to become an advocate against police brutality. "She stood up for justice for her father", the Rev. Al Sharpton said in announcing the death of Garner, 27, at a NY hospital. "I have had the privilege of joining with her at a number of events and was deeply impressed with her courage and insights", Sanders tweeted Friday. A grand jury declined to indict the officer; the city agreed to pay a $6 million civil settlement. A Justice Department probe into Garner's death has yet to conclude.

Her mother, Esaw Snipes-Garner, told the New York Daily News that her daughter's cardiac arrest was triggered by an asthma attack. News of her hospitalization and Saturday passing prompted an outpouring of support from high profile progressive activists and politicians, including Vermont Sen. "She left on her own terms".
