Gas prices continue to decline in Chattanooga

20 December 2017

With gas prices down in both Rhode Island and MA, holiday travelers will have a little extra to spend on gifts.

In September gas stations in San Antonio and across Texas were hit with shortages due to Hurricane Harvey related refinery outages and gas prices spiked.

"More than 97 million Americans will begin to hit the road this week for the holidays - the most ever on record", said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson. Gas prices are still higher than a year ago after the Harvey-related refinery shutdowns sent them spiking across Texas. The Florida average is falling at a rate of a penny per day. In Newland, around 2.37 a gallon, and in West Jefferson around 2.18 a gallon. In Massacusetts, the price of gas is up 11 percent from a year ago at this time, when it cost $2.20.

There is still a potential for further reductions in price. Motorists may see trips taking 2.5 times longer than average.

Adding to the declining trend, US refineries switch late in the year to a winter blend of gasoline, which is less expensive to make because more steps are needed with the summer blend to prevent excessive evaporation. In Pennsylvania, the average gallon of gas was $2.44. The cheapest was $2.30 in the Tampa-St.

AAA expects gasoline demand to weaken throughout the winter, which translates to better prices at the pump. The busy holiday driving season will continue to be the most expensive in years as prices remain high after Hurricane Harvey.

The average price for a gallon of gas is about 20 cents more than this time last year and about 40 cents higher than two years ago.
