East Texas schools see effects of flu season

17 December 2017

Earlier projections from the World Health Organization's earlier projections of deaths from seasonal flu - 250,000 to 500,000 per year - "are outdated", according to the study published Wednesday in The Lancet.

Virginia is considered one of just seven states across the country with widespread flu activity and it is still very early in this season.

The latest data is from the week ending in December 2nd, though new data is expected out soon.

Influenza season typically runs from October through May, often peaking in February.

"What's not measured is that, even if you get the flu in spite of the vaccine, your flu case is likely to be milder; you're less likely to have the complications of pneumonia, having to be hospitalized and dying", he said. "His death is a reminder of how serious the flu can be, especially among vulnerable populations".

The state Health Department says influenza is now prevalent in NY state, which means health care workers who haven't had a flu shot must wear procedural masks around patients. "And, since there is some question that the flu might peak around the holidays, my recommendation is to not wait any longer", said Dr. Daniel Skiest, vice-chair of the Department of Medicine and an infectious disease specialist at Baystate Medical Center, in a statement urging people to get vaccinated.

Over the past week in North Dakota, there were 104 new cases of the flu.

"We still have flu vaccine available, so if you haven't already, now is the time to get your flu vaccination".

Symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. One false misconception is that an individual can get flu from the vaccine.

But the reason the 2017 shot isn't preventing as many cases of the H3N2 strain is that while scientists were growing the virus in chicken eggs, that strain mutated.

According to Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health, seasonal influenza, "the flu", has arrived with lab confirmed cases of Influenza A in local long-term care homes, as well as within the community. You should inform your doctor when you have been vaccinated.

Common respiratory diseases related to seasonal influenza that can cause death include pneumonia and bronchitis.
