"Bohemian Rhapsody" Has a New Director

10 December 2017

The Freddie Mercury biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" was shaken this week after the firing of director Bryan Singer, but the show must go on.

Representatives from Fox have now confirmed that Fletcher, who helmed films such as Eddie the Eagle and Wild Bill, will replace Singer. That news was followed up by a response from Singer's camp, claiming that the studio did not make allowances for the director to care for an ailing parent.

The actor turned Bafta-nominated director was previously set to direct the Mercury film only to leave the project in 2014.

Fletcher will only have a couple of weeks left to direct the remainder of the film, as Singer had nearly completed production on it.

"I wanted nothing more than to be able to finish this project and help honor the legacy of Freddie Mercury and Queen, but Fox would not permit me to do so because I needed to temporarily put my health, and the health of my loved ones, first", Singer wrote.

In a statement issued through his lawyer, Singer said he had asked for time off to deal with a "pressing" family matter.

The film is now scheduled for release in December next year.

The decision reflected an escalating clash between Singer and actor Rami Malek and was caused by Singer's being missing from the set, necessitating the December 1 production shutdown of the film in which Malek stars as Freddie Mercury, frontman of the rock group Queen, which has been shooting in London. "The full cast of the film was revealed shortly after, with 'X-Men Apocalypse" s Ben Hardy playing drummer Roger Taylor, 'The Tourist" s Gwilym Lee portraying Brian May and 'Jurassic Park" s Joe Mazzello taking the role of bass guitarist John Deacon.
