Democratic Representative John Conyers of MI, the longest-serving House member, announced on Tuesday that he's retiring from Congress immediately amid allegations that he sexually harassed members of his staff.
Reed said Tuesday that Conyers likely will call the radio show because his client shouldn't "risk his health" by traveling outside in the cold weather.
He said he's endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in Congress. Conyers faced calls to resign following reports that he reached a $27,000 settlement with a former aide who said she was sacked for rejecting his sexual advances.
John Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed, would not confirm or deny that the congressman was planning to retire in a phone conversation with The Associated Press early Tuesday.
Conyers on Tuesday endorsed his son, John Conyers III, for the seat.
Speaking from an unnamed hospital where he reportedly was being treated for stress-related complications, the longest-serving member of Congress maintained that the allegations against him "are not true", and that he could not explain their origin. Conyers settled a wrongful dismissal claim in 2015 with a former employee who said he fired her because she said no to his sexual advances. Grubbs is the cousin of another accuser, Marion Brown, who previously broke a confidentiality agreement to speak publicly.
In the affidavit, Grubbs said Brown told her, "That SOB just wanted me to have sex with him".
The allegations spurred a House Ethics Committee investigation into Conyers' conduct.Читайте также: Director Bryan Singer kicked off Queen biopic
"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we're going through now". Other local media also reported the plans, citing sources close to Conyers.
John Conyers returned to Detroit from Washington last week and was hospitalized on Wednesday after complaining that he felt light-headed. And a former scheduler complained of sexual harassment and retaliation.
Another woman has come forward claiming with sexual misconduct allegations against Rep. A few days later, she finally stated she believed Conyers should resign.
"Whatever (the allegations) are, they are not accurate", he said. Conyers, facing sexual misconduct allegations, has refused to step down even after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi urged the veteran Democrat from Detroit to do so.
The elder Conyers, however, continued to deny the allegations leveled against him.
Conyers has already stepped down from his leadership position as ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee late last month.
Melanie Sloan, a former Conyers aide and Washington lawyer, told The Washington Post last week that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her when she worked for his Washington office in the 1990s.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
