Gujarat on High Alert Ahead of Cyclone Ockhi, Schools Shut Down

06 December 2017

The EC was made aware of the possibility of Ockhi crossing South Gujarat and adjoining North Maharashtra coasts near Surat by midnight on Tuesday. Former Congress strongman Shankersinh Vaghela, who floated his Jan Vikalp front, was also forced to cancel his roadshows and rallies that were to be held in Junagadh, and Mahuva and Palitana towns of Saurashtra, a leader of his outfit said.

The Home Ministry has claimed that Cyclone Ockhi is likely to be less effective in Gujarat. Even as cyclone Ockhi has now moved north of L&M islands, deployment of ships and aircraft are continuing in the area to search for the persons stranded at sea.

Beside Modi's rally, a public meeting of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari in Surat on Wednesday have also been postponed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a dozen rallies over three days from Thursday, weather permitting.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister appealed the BJP workers to focus on helping people across the state. It is expected to make landfall in coastal Gujarat today with squally winds and heavy rainfall.

He tweeted to inform that he has spoken to all relevant authorities and officials and that all possible assistance is being provided to those affected. Since this morning, all our workers have spread across the city to help people. "During this work, we will not wear any scarves having BJP's election symbol", Sanghvi said. Schools in 16 villages in Ahmedabad will also stay closed on account of Cyclone Ockhi.
