Victory for Ali over Cotto was a case of second time lucky in world title fights after previously challenging for world honours at welterweight.
It wasn't to be a win in the end for Cotto on his final fight of his career, whom succumbed to a points loss to Sadam Ali but like he always did - Cotto fought with his heart on his sleeve and entertained the fans.
Post fight Miguel Cotto would go on to say that he picked up a bicep injury in round seven of the contest, but reaffirmed that this would be his last fight and looks forward to spending more time at home with his family.
This was not the way Miguel Cotto's legendary career was supposed to end.
"I want to thank Team Cotto for giving me this opportunity", Ali said. I don't want to make excuses. This is the opportunity of a lifetime in Madison Square Garden.
Ali did a fine job, not just outboxing Cotto, but doing the more damage, staggering Cotto with a straight right to the jaw in the 2nd, with a left hook to the temple in the 4th, and with another left hook in the 11th. "They could have taken an easier fight".Читайте также: City tops in crimes against sr citizens, 2nd against women
Perhaps sensing that the judges might gift Cotto a couple of rounds, Ali went for broke in the final two frames. "I knew I had to do something, or he would have dug in".
Ali added: "Good things happen to good people". The 3rd brought back and forth action from both fighters leading to intelligent exchanges and a more dominant Cotto round.
Ali is 26-1. He started quickly, then was stunned by a big right from Cotto that staggered him. His hand speed and movement around the ring made him formidable last Saturday night.
"I've been fighting since I was eight years old, and I've been in big arenas". With Ali widely viewed as a designated victim, that might have contributed to Cotto's farewell fight playing to more empty seats than he has been accustomed to in a city that has more residents of Puerto Rican descent than San Juan.
Unless Cotto yields to some unforeseen urge to withdraw his pledge to stay retired, his legacy shall forever remain beyond reproach or cause for sympathetic tsk-tsks. So he improved to 31-0, while Negrete fell to 17-1. Ali, who was rated No. 9 by the WBO, is not renowned for his punching power, and his chin has been suspect ever since he was stopped in nine rounds in his previous shot at a world title, against Jessie Vargas on March 5, 2016, in Washington, D.C., with the vacant WBO welterweight belt on the line. Yet, it was Vargas who looked the worse when they left the ring.
The former four-division champion came back to buzz Ali in the sixth round, and won the seventh and eighth rounds on all three scorecards. "But I didn't want to get over myself and get caught with a shot".При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
