NCAA smacks Ole Miss with additional postseason ban, more scholarship cuts

02 Декабря 2017

The NCAA laid down harsh penalties against the University of MS on Friday, including scholarship reductions and a postseason ban, as part of the investigation into a series of recruiting violations committed by the football program.

The NCAA slapped the program with lack of institutional control and an additional bowl ban in 2018 on top of the self-imposed ban the school applied in 2017, which means that seniors in the program can transfer to any FBS program without penalty for the 2018 season. The NCAA has levied further sanctions against the school's football program for a multi-layered recruiting scandal, according to a report from Steven Godfrey of SB Nation. "The panel noted that the case was the result of a culture at the university where rules violations were acceptable in the football program and reminiscent of similar Ole Miss infractions cases in the past". "The additional postseason ban is excessive and does not take into account the corrective actions that we have made in personnel, structure, policies and processes to address the issues".

Hours after the NCAA handed down to Ole Miss the final penalties in an investigation in the football program, the fired coach in the middle of it all, Hugh Freeze released a statement.

In addition to the postseason ban and loss of scholarships, the NCAA will vacate wins where ineligible players were active, but the exact wins are not known at the time and are being assessed by the university.

The COI expressly agreed that I "promoted an atmosphere of compliance and expected my staff to abide by the rules". An assistant coach and operations coordinator also acted unethically when they arranged the fraudulent ACT scores and arranged for a booster to provide housing and transportation to five prospects while they completed the necessary academic work to become eligible for competition. The show-cause is directly related to the NCAA investigation into recruiting violations.

Ole Miss reached the.500 mark after beating Mississippi State 31-28 on Thanksgiving. School officials removed the interim tag from head coach Matt Luke after his team's victory over their in-state rivals, but now faces an increasingly long road toward getting the Rebels back to national respectability. The school said the resignation was not in relation to the NCAA case.
