Padmavati row: Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Prasoon Joshi to meet parliamentary panel

30 Ноября 2017

Padmavati movie director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is in Delhi to appear before parliamentary panel. "The panel has asked Mr Bhansali and Mr Joshi to appear before it and present their views on the movie". In dismissing a petition seeking a stay on the UKrelease of the film, the bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Mishra, reprimanded people in public offices who were commenting on whether the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) should certify the film.

The Panel will be chaired by Anurag Thakur and will also be hearing from CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi and officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Petitioner M.L. Sharma, an advocate, had sought criminal prosecution of the movie's director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and producer Mukesh Ambani, and a stay on the film's release overseas, which he claimed the makers were planning.

"They are violating the principle of rule of law", the court said further observing, "We say nothing more, nothing less for the time being". Now, they say that as they have applied for the new application now they will be looking into the new application.

The court also junked a petition by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma objecting to the offshore release of the film Padmavati.

The filmmakers have submitted three applications, including the latest 3D one, to the Censor Board. Historians are divided over whether Padmini actually existed. A formal decision on the second application has been cleared yet by the board yet.

The court's remarks adopt implication with the chief ministers of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh banning the film. The makers of the film will announce a revised date after clearance from the CBFC. Taking exception to Sharma's plea, the court said it was unwarranted. They will restart our plan once the movie will get the certificate. The court is saying that the remarks were tantamount to pre-judging the movie is yet to be certified by the censor board.

The period drama starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor has been facing protests from various communal groups, including Shree Rajput Karni Sena, for allegedly tampering historical facts.
