US Officials Charge Hacker For Massive HBO Breach

24 November 2017

Episodes of Game of Thrones, Ballers and Arrested Development were leaked online last summer during the now-famous "HBO hack". Kim also added that the fact that Mesri is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation will make traveling outside of Iran's borders hard. Mesri had "previously hacked computer systems for the Iranian military", and allegedly "infiltrated HBO's systems, stole proprietary data, then sought to extort HBO of $6 million in Bitcoins", said Kim.

It might be a total coincidence, but on the same day of his indictment, a team of hackers took Sacramento's transportation system by storm, erasing data from their servers and demanding a ransom of one single Bitcoin, which is more than $8200 at this time.

Mesri, a member of the Iran-supported Turk Black Hat Security team, conducted "hundreds of website defacements" in the US and across the world, prosecutors said.

Mesri, also known as "Skote Vahshat", was named in Tuesday's indictment by acting Manhattan US Attorney Joon H. Kim. Several sources told the publication that "a series of criminal cases could increase pressure on lawmakers" to reimpose sanctions on Tehran.

Moore campaign lashes out again at accusations
While Speier did not say that he should have resigned, she did suggest that his accusers should have been treated differently. Moore, 70, has denied the accusations and has said he is the victim of a witch hunt.

The indictment charges Behzad Mesri, who had, according to a press release from the US attorney, "previously worked on behalf of the Iranian military" with the act.

"HBO was on [e] of our hard targets to deal with but we succeeded", he wrote in one July 23 email, according to the indictment. HBO received emails that indicated the information and episodes were being held for ransom, and that they would be released and/or destroyed if the cabler did not pay, Kim said, adding that HBO did not make payments.

The HBO hack echoes the 2014 hack of Sony, exposing internal documents and emails. Things then went from bad to worse throughout the course of the eight-episode run including leaked Game of Thrones scripts and the biggest episode of the season, 'Beyond the Wall', when Jon and his party ventured past the Wall to capture a white walker. Mesri has been added to the FBI's "Most Wanted" list and Kim noted, "He will never be able to travel outside of Iran without fear of being arrested and brought here to face these charges".
