In the USA state of Oklahoma, a local resident was sentenced to 10 years in prison for marriage with their own biological mother, reports the Tulsa World.

The 26-year-old spent the majority of her life without Patricia Ann Spann, however they reconnected recently and reportedly "hit it off".

Patricia Spann told the investigator that she lost custody of Misty Spann and her other two children, who were put in the care of their grandparents when they were children.

Misty also annulled her marriage with her mum, putting down "illegality and fraud" in the reasons box. The blood relatives married in Comanche County, after filing their license application in March 2016.

In September 2016, Patricia and Misty Spann were arrested for incest.

In Oklahoma, incest is a felony crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

When investigators discovered the illegal relationship, Patricia told officials she didn't think she was breaking any laws by marrying Misty because her name is no longer listed on her daughter's birth certificate.

Patricia has pleaded not guilty to incest, and will appear in court for trial at a later date.

Misty said at the time that her mother told her she had received legal advice indicating that their marriage was legal.
