Man arrested after vicious knife attack on Edmonton police officer

Sharif's bail hearing was delayed until Tuesday but police released a photo of Sharif taken after his capture, showing a young man gazing directly at the camera, a large bruise on his forehead.

Documents show Abdulahi Sharif, 30, is facing a total of eleven charges: five counts of attempted murder, four counts of risky driving causing bodily harm while fleeing police, and one charge each of unsafe driving, and possession of a weapon.

RCMP launched the investigation, which included interviews with Sharif and others, after receiving a tip about a man "espousing extremist ideology", according to the Globe.

"Currently, we believe this is an individual who acted alone, although the investigation is in its early stages", said Chief Rod Knecht.

Police say it began outside Commonwealth Stadium, northeast of downtown, in a game between the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

According to police, a police officer controlling traffic at a Canadian Football League game was struck by a auto at high speed and then attacked with a knife multiple times by the driver who then fled abandoning the vehicle. The terrorist, who had an ISIS flag in the front seat of his vehicle, then jumped out of the auto and attacked the officer with a knife, stabbing him repeatedly.

After Chernyk managed to fight him off, the suspect drove off.

Chernyk was cut on his face and had abrasions on his arms, but is expected to make a full recovery. The driver sped away after the officers noticed the name on the licence was similar to the name broadcast, sparking a high-speed police chase.

Knecht said when the U-Haul pulled over for the checkpoint, the driver was confronted after he produced identification linking him to the registered owner of the Malibu.

Then around 11:33, a U-Haul truck was stopped during a traffic stop, but fled the scene, hitting four pedestrians before the tactical unit conducted a maneuver to put it on its side and the driver was taken into custody.

The truck fled the scene, and was pursued by officers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident a "terrorist attack", and urged Canadians to be vigilant.

"He was stabbed several times and he was able to fend off the attacker even after getting thrown through the air after being struck by the vehicle", said Det.

Police said they have been in contact with the RCMP National Security Unit and there has been no change in threat assessment at a national level. "I'm shocked - I just see people flying".

Two of the four pedestrians remain in hospital, one with a fractured skull. "Further, the suspect was not deemed, at that time, to pose a threat to the security of Canada based on the information that was available to investigators".
