No. 6 USC knocks off No. 14 Stanford

11 September 2017

Stanford Cardinal and USC Trojans face off in the second week of the 2017 college football on Saturday.

Stanford: That 62-point performance in the season opener Down Under was impossible to replicate against a top Pac-12 defense, and the Cardinal's offense will know it must add versatility to the attack.

USC took a 28-17 lead into the second half, but an interception by Alijah Holder at the goal line spoiled the Trojans' threat to extend the lead on their first series.

Stanford's listed at +210 on the money line, indicating a 32 percent chance of happening. Such a high-profile date this early provides an interesting measuring stick for the remainder of the season. I am sticking with Stanford with the points. "It's very important to have a test that early in the season that proves every suspicion and proves our ambitions of what can come true".

"We beat them at their own game", USC safety Chris Hawkins said.

Nevertheless, this matchup has taken on a rivalry feel.

It wasn't enough and Stanford couldn't keep going to Love almost as much as you have to imagine that Shaw and offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren wanted.

"He's got great running form", Stanford coach David Shaw said.

Hardee County deputy, corrections officer killed in head-on crash
Joseph Ossman was reporting to duty at the Hardee Correctional Institution when the crash occurred. She was planning on returning to work another shift this morning when she was killed.

USC needed eight to match, and as the Trojans once again threatened the end zone, Terrence Stephens' powerful right hand thumped the ball out. Previous year marked Stanford's sixth season with 10-plus victories since 2010. "They've had our number for the last couple of years (three straight wins, each by double-digits)".

"He reminds you of (former NFL All-Pro) Jamaal Charles", Shaw said. "Running the ball, being physical, and it showed today". It's my type of football; I love playing against them. Carr made a splash in his collegiate debut, rushing for a pair of touchdowns. Through 30 minutes Love has absolutely torched the USC defense to the tune of 141 yards and a touchdown. The tight end position is stocked with options, including freshman Colby Parkinson (three catches for 40 yards and two touchdowns), Kaden Smith and Dalton Schultz.

Further underscoring the importance of the run game: In nine of 10 meetings since 2008 - and each of the last four - the team with the rushing advantage won.

The USC Trojans (1-0) are coming from a 49-31 over the Western Michigan Broncos in Week 1.

USC quarterback Sam Darnold set a bar that will be almost impossible to reach. Sean Barton leads the Stanford Cardinal with six tackles, Peter Kalambayi has one sack and Jovan Swann has one interception. Getting Jones on track would be a huge plus for USC as it looks to slow down the Stanford pass rush.

"I've been dreaming about this", said USC linebacker Cameron Smith, who was 0-3 against the Cardinal in his career.

Sam Darnold entered the season as one of the favorites to win the Heisman and was a big reason why USC was considered one of the CFB Playoff favorites. Stanford won four of the previous five here since 2007.

LOS ANGELES - At times it looked like John Elway was back in a Stanford football game, dancing to elude pass rushers and firing darts to his receivers. A bad snap to Darnold resulted in the only other tackle for loss USC has surrendered through two games.
