Tennessee guesses right on final 2-point attempt, topples Georgia Tech

06 September 2017

The Georgia Tech secondary had a solid outing, knocking away a number of passes and causing a handful of incompletions with some big hits.

And it was no different for the Tennessee football program when they faced the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Monday night. Give their kid credit.

The junior bell cow back for Tennessee made the most of 24 touches as he gained 163 total yards (128 rushing, 35 receiving). Jones said the Vols would spend a lot of time watching the film, but with a short week separating Tennessee from its game Saturday against Indiana State, it makes just as much sense for them to move on and enjoy the relief of no longer having to spend every waking moment thinking about cut blocks.

Tech quarterback TaQuon Marshall was virtually unstoppable as he ran 44 times for a school record 249 yards and five touchdowns. Sure, defending the triple option is hard, but the best times to face it are during bowl games and the first game of the season - when you have plenty of time to prepare.

But it was definitely a tough one, and there was certainly a bit of luck involved.

Georgia Tech dominated time of possession 56:27 to 18:33 and still lost. Marshall showed his wheels when he went right, juked left and picked up 28 yards to the Tennessee 6-yard line. Jordan directed an upset at Virginia Tech last season and rushed for six touchdowns in nine games, attempting just nine passes on the season, but does have experienced running backs in Clinton Lynch (905 all-purpose yards) and J.J Green.

But lousy kicking and a collapsing defense undid everything, and it's not the first time in Johnson's time here we could say as much. "We need to get better", Mallory said. The ball kissed the ground before reaching the B-back's hands.

Rattled by the test, South Korea conducted live-fire exercises at sea in its second straight day of military display. These are not diplomats accredited by the US State Department, they are staff members of an worldwide organization.

"It will be an honor to see Bobby Dodd's legacy live on throughout the game", said Chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation Jim Terry, during announcements leading up to the game. Georgia Tech led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The deficit seemed insurmountable, given the Vols' struggles to that point, but Callaway erased half of it in one blur. Our tackle reaches out and tries to reach the 5, and then the guard turned up into him, and there was nobody, the quarterback had to turn up, and there was nobody on the linebacker, and then he pitched it late, but he had to kind of throw it out there.

"I took this game to heart, I wanted to prove that I belonged to be in the lineup and I feel like I did that", Bituli said.

(1:22 - 3rd) John Kelly run for 30 yards to the Georgia Tech 5 yard line for a first down. But he saved his biggest play for the last when Georgia Tech elected to go for two points in the second overtime.

The problem, of course, is that Tennessee fans do not think Butch is a very good coach. That play was so - that should have been a walk-in, and we screwed that up, so we didn't deserve to win. "I'm not losing to this offense again, '" he said.

(1:11 - 2nd) KirVonte Benson 1 yard touchdown run.

ESPN appeared to capture a Tennessee player saying "I'm not going to class" after the game. "I'm ready to lead the team and do great things this year".
