Samsung Gear Sport hands-on

31 August 2017

Samsung's Gear Sport, Gear Fit2 Pro, and Icon X are all variations of designs we've seen before.

Next, the Gear Fit2 Pro.

On both the Samsung Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro, the Speedo On app enables swimmers to complete time trials and get their SWOLF score (a swim efficiency measure). All that's pretty exciting stuff even for a non-athlete such as myself - and to hear Samsung tell it, that's kind of the whole idea. You just need to make sure you have a compatible Samsung smartphone (Note 8, S8 or S8+) to make the Bixby magic happen, though.

As for the other features on the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro, it also offers built-in Global Positioning System and heart rate monitoring, so you've got everything you need to leave your smartphone at home for the morning run.

First up, let's take a look at the Gear Sport. Samsung has also partnered Under Armour and Spotify, along with apps such as Under Armour Record, MyFitnessPal, MapMyRun and Endomondo for nutrition, activity, sleep and fitness tracking. One can use the smartwatch even under the water given that it is waterproof. Designed with military-level-durability, it can handle a wide-range of environments3.

Berkeley Police Arrest 13 as Anarchists Storm Right-Wing Event
Police want to know whether other crimes occurred during the Sunday protests and are continuing to investigate incidents that day. The demonstration morphed into a "No Hate Rally" that spilled over into other parks in the area.

Garry McGregor, Director, IT and Mobile, Samsung Electronics Australia says the device is perfectly timed for a growing fitness market "In 2017, fitness means more than just burning calories in the gym".

The new watch features a 1.2-inch circular face, and displays text and email notifications alongside activity detection, nutritional advice and continuous heart monitoring functionality.

In terms of traditional smartwatch features, there are, of course, staples like Samsung Pay and access to the third-party application storefront, as well as some goodies from the nice-to-have category like remote control for PowerPoint presentations or Samsung's own Gear VR. It's got the same compatibility as the Gear Sport for Android and iOS devices and comes in black or red.

There's a 300mAh battery inside the Samsung Gear Sport, and with wireless charging it should be easy to top up at night - hopefully no fumbling around in the dark for a cable. The Gear Fit2 Pro was also announced as an update to last year's Fit2 model. With a fast-charging and improved battery life of up to five hours of music streaming or seven hours of standalone music playback, and up to 4GB of internal storage, you can enjoy a seamless and fully standalone music listening experience.

That makes it smaller and lighter than the Samsung Gear S3 - which is what you want if you're going to be working out or playing sport while wearing the watch.
