Minnesota volunteers join Harvey relief effort

The South Carolina region of the Red Cross is sending 53 volunteers to areas affected by Harvey along with three response vehicles. "They may have helped in local shelters here, but now they will be helping set up ones out of state, reporting to managers from Texas, California and elsewhere who are there to help".

Hurricane Harvey's effects on the Texas coast are likely to be long-lasting and varied. Hundreds of calls were made into the U.S. Coast Guard Sunday as people became stranded on their rooftops due to flooding.

Houston-area officials said they already performed more than 1,000 water rescues and almost 1,000 more were in queue early Sunday as torrential rain from Harvey in the city and across southeast Texas. She said more waves of New Jersey disaster relief workers are expected to deploy to the area in the following weeks.

The first of two emergency response vehicles from the D.C. area left for Texas Sunday morning.

While people often want to donate items, Farmer said that isn't as helpful as money.
