After a whirlwind of trade talks involving Kyrie Irving had seemingly died down, the Cavs reached a deal with the most unexpected of trade partners - the Boston Celtics. I didn't think the Celtics and Cavaliers would even consider a swap like this. "If you look at Boston, the way they're positioned, this could be the team that could be in the NBA Finals three or four times in the next five or six years". It could give the Cavaliers a massive trading chip that could get them an impact player LeBron really wants (not sure if the possible top pick is worth trading for LeBron's pal Melo though).
This trade suggests to me that the Cavaliers are having one last shot at glory, and have assumed LeBron James will not re-sign with them. He missed most of the East finals with a hip injury. But despite Thomas' stellar play and seemingly high approval ratings in Boston through the course of last season, Celtics fans still took to the streets and posted videos on social media of them burning his jersey once the trade was officially announced. The Celtics got a superstar and an upgrade at point guard.
The Cavaliers also received a highly-coveted asset in the 2018 unprotected Nets pick from the Celtics, which actually could end up being the most valuable piece in this trade.

Rhode would get a huge reaction from the crowd and go on to defeat English via pinfall after hitting a Glorious DDT for the win. The general manager said all he saw was a champion who can't win without the Singhs, so Mahal called Bryan a xenophobe.
James will now try to blend his skills with Thomas, a point guard who likes to have the ball in his hands. Thomas averaged 28.9 points per game, while Irving was not far behind with 25.2.
For his career, Irving carries averages of 21.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists, shooting.457 from the field and.383 from 3-point range. And oh yeah, he's only 25 years old. As gifted a scorer as Irving is, he has yet to prove he's capable of being the Number One option on a contender team.
Winfield explains every other major move the Celtics made between 2013 and now that led to acquiring Uncle Drew from Cleveland, including moving Rajon Rondo to the Mavericks in 2014 and grabbing Isaiah Thomas from the Suns in 2015 for nearly nothing.
The Kings traded Thomas to the Phoenix Suns in 2014, and then he was sent to Boston as part of a trade in 2015. Danny can also be heard weekends on WEEI 93.7 FM.
