Samsung confirms it's working on a smart speaker

24 August 2017

Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Korean manufacturer is developing a smart speaker powered by Samsung's Bixby voice assistant, which is similar to Apple's Siri and Google's Assistant. The company confirmed that Bixby will soon get Spotify support. "In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalized interactions and seamless connections across more devices".

In South Korea, the feature has 1.3 million users and has accumulated 250 million voice commands so far. Issues for Bixby included the difficulty translating Bixby into languages besides English and the program's lack of accumulated user experience compared to older assistant programs like Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant.

Fan Trailer Taps Into The Superheroic Potential Of Tonight's Game Of Thrones
Are you? Of course not, how could anyone be after what we saw on Sunday night? We just can't wait for the finale episode, can we? By now, we know that Season 8 will be Game of Thrones' last and that it will be the shortest, clocking in at six episodes .

Samsung plans to continue expanding Bixby's voice capabilities to additional countries, languages, devices, features and third-party applications.

CNBC reports that "DJ Koh, the president of Samsung's mobile division, said a smart speaker was on the way". On the home appliance side, Samsung has a substantial number of devices for sale that feature smart home functionality and also has its own SmartThings standard for networked local connectivity among products. He told the news network that "I am already working on it" and the company will soon announce it. CNBC was interviewing Koh ahead of the Note 8 smartphone launch. Bixby's Spotify support will presumably also be available on other Galaxy-branded devices that are set to receive the AI companion in the coming months, with recent rumors indicating that Samsung is now in the process of developing a rollout plan that would also encompass some of its mid-range and older flagship offerings.
