Right-wing media and Russian bots unite to target Trump's national security adviser

06 August 2017

The deep dive from the Post details McMaster's first six months heading up the National Security Council, and his attempts to bring order to an administration in chaos.

James Carafano, a former Trump transition team official and vice president of the conservative Heritage Foundation, decried as counterproductive the recent spate of "blood-in-the-water" rumors.

On "The Story" tonight, Lt. Col. Michael Waltz (Ret.) said Trump is right to be frustrated with the lack of a comprehensive strategy in Afghanistan.

U.S. President Donald Trump's doubts about the war in Afghanistan has led to a delay in completing a new U.S. strategy in South Asia, skepticism that included a suggestion that the U.S. military commander in the region be fired, U.S. officials said on Wednesday.

McMaster continued: "So what we have to do is. everything we can to pressure this regime, to pressure Kim Jong Un and those around him such that they conclude it is in their interest to denuclearise".

Though Harvey has a reputation as a belligerent Iran hawk, his and McMaster's views on the the Islamic Republic deal did not result in his dismissal, aides said. Then again, no one who isn't related to the president is ever safe in this White House, and it seems clear that Trump remains antsy about McMaster, but that, for now at least, he is more fond of McMaster than he is of feeling forced to fire him.

Although Trump earlier this year gave Mattis the authority to deploy USA military forces as he sees fit, in fact the defense secretary's plans to add around 4,000 more US troops to the 8,400 now deployed in Afghanistan are being caught up in the delay surrounding the strategy, the officials said.

McMaster moved to replace the Jewish official when the concerns were raised in March, but Cohen-Watnick appealed to Trump's top advisers, Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner, who got Trump to intervene to save his job. On July 21, McMaster dismissed Rich Higgins, a top NSC official who was "seen as an ally of" Bannon, after Higgins wrote a memo claiming that "globalists and Islamists" were trying to undermine Trump, according to The Atlantic. "He's one of the few people who can articulate Trump's vision effectively", an official told the website.

Trump also says McMaster "is a good man and very pro-Israel".

The attacks directed at McMaster came from conservative news sites and grew on social media.

Following the departure from the Trump administration of White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, and Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, the betting game began.

Some conservatives have also criticized him for granting security clearance to Susan Rice, Obama's national security adviser.

Guest host Dana Perino asked if McMaster is on thin ice at the White House.
