US Not Seeking to Topple North Korea Regime, Says Tillerson

04 August 2017

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson attends a joint news conference with Qatar's foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani in Doha, Qatar, July 11, 2017. "Secondary sanctions will absolutely strain the US-China relationship, but however productive or unproductive they may be, they are the only thing the US has", she told The Straits Times. In Malaysia, he will discuss bilateral relations with officials.

"All United States passports are declared invalid for travel to, in, or through the DPRK unless specially validated for such travel", read the restriction in the USA government's Federal Register, using the acronym for North Korea's official name.

United States officials have steadily condemned North Korea's missile tests, which are a violation of worldwide law.

Referring to the border between the Koreas, Tillerson said, "We do not seek a regime change, we do not seek the collapse of the regime, we do not seek an accelerated reunification of the peninsula, we do not seek an excuse to send our military north of the 38th parallel". Some policies and talking points have remained unchanged, the biggest being that negotiations without North Korea committing to denuclearization up-front are a non-starter. "We're not your threat, but you are presenting an unacceptable threat to us, and we have to respond".

Warmbier, 22, a student at the University of Virginia, died in June after being held by Pyongyang for more than a year on charges of stealing a propaganda poster from a North Korean hotel. "We do not seek regime change".

We certainly don't blame the Chinese for the situation in North Korea. Given that, the United States continues to bank on China.

Bush's White House, said it appears that little progress has been made since the administration unveiled its tax goals in April. In coming weeks the administration, lawmakers and advocacy groups will undertake a concerted campaign for tax reform.

Briefing reporters on diplomatic efforts to pressure Pyongyang, Tillerson said Washington would be willing to talk to the North if its leaders accept that they must disarm.

"We see a growing determination on their part to take steps to try to address the situation seriously", said Thornton. "But they will not be allowed to have a missile to hit America with a nuclear weapon on top".

Thornton said Tillerson, who begins his quick Asean tour in Manila on Saturday, will press Thailand for greater cooperation in isolating North Korea and in enforcing United Nations sanctions over its missile and nuclear weapons programmes.

On Tuesday, Mr Tillerson appeared to try to clarify the U.S. stance, saying: "We have been very clear with the Chinese".

US President Donald Trump on Saturday accused Beijing of doing "nothing" to help on North Korea and pointed to the huge US trade deficit with China.

Brownfield is also already well known in Latin America, having served as ambassador to Chile, Venezuela, and Colombia over the past 15 years, among other positions.
