Trump & Senators Make Immigration Policy Announcement

"That is why we are here today: Merit-based", Trump said, joined at the White House Roosevelt Room podium by the bill's sponsors, Sens.

"Switching away from this current system of lower-skilled immigration, and instead adopting a merit-based system, we will have so many more benefits".

Trump declares the bill to be the most significant immigration reform in half a century.

"The RAISE Act will reduce poverty, increase wages and save taxpayers billions and billions of dollars", Mr. Trump said. His paper Breitbart sums up the political messaging Trump wants America's farmers to hear - "If the RAISE act becomes law, Democrats and their business allies would lose the huge annual inflow of immigrants whom they expect will soon bring them national political dominance". The legislation would also cap the amount of refugees admitted into the country at 50,000 per year.

It also proposes to end the "diversity visa lottery" under which the United States grants 50,000 green cards annually to people randomly selected from countries with low rates of immigration to the US.

The bill also proposed to eliminate certain pathways to family-based immigration, stipulating that only spouses and minor children of United States citizens and permanent residents would be eligible for green cards.

That's NRO's Robert VerBruggen describing Tom Cotton's and David Perdue's RAISE Act.

Herat, close to the border with Iran, is considered one of Afghanistan's more peaceful cities. Both are dead, a local police spokesperson told AFP .

But the legislation faces an uphill climb to get through Congress where some senior Republicans back comprehensive immigration reform, not a tough crackdown.

Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric was reiterated by Cotton who offered the same populist frame that said little but implied quite a lot. "Returning to our historically normal levels of legal immigration will help improve the quality of American jobs and wages". They have said the legislation aims to cut legal immigration in half from 1 million to 500,000 a year. John McCain of Arizona, have introduced their own immigration legislation that would provide a path to legalization for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.

"Restricting immigration will only condemn us to chronically low rates of economic growth", said Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at the Economic Outlook Group.

Trump called the bill the biggest change to US immigration policy in 50 years.

The potential proposed legislation would change America's immigration system to a skills-based process, according to the report.

Legal immigrants are coming into the country at historic lows, Bier said.

Officials stopped short of saying Trump would endorse the bill on Wednesday. He also argued that refugees also boost the economy.
