Jon Rahm secures convincing six-stroke Irish Open victory

10 July 2017

One week after his T6 in the Open de France was one shot shy of winning him an Open exemption the New Zealander went one better - although, having tied David Drysdale and Daniel Im, Drysdale and Fox took spots thanks only to superior world rankings. My putting and short game has never been my best ally on links courses, but this week has been the opposite.

"I haven't made any big mistakes and I am putting well and I think that is the main (reason why I am in this position)", said Tanihara, whose bogey at the 17th was only his second dropped shot of the tournament.

Spanish star Jon Rahm says it is "really special" to join his compatriots Seve Ballesteros, Jose-Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia in becoming an Irish Open victor.

Ultimately, it was all about Rahm, who produced spectacular scoring golf on the final day to continue the 22-year-old's rise as one of the sport's burgeoning talents. Also playing are Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood and Thomas Pieters.

His compatriot and fellow house guest Julien Quesne equalled his course record of day one with a 64 - which moments later Australia's Scott Hend too achieved.

Gulf crisis: Qatar to seek compensation for damages caused by Arab blockade
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has flown to Kuwait and Qatar to try and bring an end to the diplomatic crisis in the Gulf region. To date, none of the bloc countries have provided evidence to support their allegations.

Not many people would have tipped the former Walker Cup player to be the leading light from this island come the end of the tournament but it has been a week to confound predictions at every turn.

The errant ball-placement-a matter of millimeters-was discussed between Rahm, Im, and European Tour chief referee Andy McPhee, and ultimately Rahm was not penalized.

Jamie Donaldson, who was tied for 12th after 36 holes, withdrew before his third round because of a pulled muscle in his back. Yardage: 7,004. Par: 72.

Rose's round didn't begin well as he slipped to a bogey on the first. 3 and 5. She rebounded with a birdied on No. 6, ran off four straight on Nos. Kirk won the last of her two tour titles in 2010.
