Teen accidentally shot by deputies fending off dog

23 June 2017

The Los Angeles Times, citing an internal sheriff's memo, reported the dog was shot but survived.

The deputies had been called to the Palmdale complex at about 3:45 a.m. with complaints of a loud party.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a person in Palmdale early Thursday, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

Two deputies responded to reports of loud music shortly before 4 a.m.at an apartment complex on the 38500 block of Tenth Street East.

"As they were waiting for medical treatment to arrive, the pit bull came from the rear carport area location, and again charged deputies", Bergner said.

At that point, a male Hispanic juvenile came out and apparently tried to restrain the dog.

Phil Klotzbach, this is the first time since 1968 that the Atlantic has had simultaneous storms during the month of June. Tropical Storm Bret formed Monday afternoon off the northern coast of South America, the National Hurricane center said.

The deputies were approaching the driveway when an approximately 60- to 65-pound adult male pitbull charged and bit one of them on the left knee, Bergner said at a late morning news conference held at the scene of the shooting. As he jumped on the dog, he was struck in the chest with a bullet. The dog will likely be euthanized, according to the sheriff's department.

Deputies shot and wounded the dog when it was about 10 feet away, then chased it as it tried to run back behind the building, officials said.

Authorities did not immediately say what prompted deputies to fire on the suspect.

Bergner called the shooting an "extremely, extremely unfortunate incident". The shooting will also be reported to the sheriff's department's office of the inspector general, which will provide oversight of the investigative process.

"Two deputies engaged the dog in gunfire focused on the dog itself".

We will update this story with more information as it becomes available following the Sheriff's Department's investigation.
