US Congress baseball game brings unity after shooting of Republican Steve Scalise

22 June 2017

In his first public comments since the shooting, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity. Mr Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.

Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch.

Moments before, Bailey stood in the middle of Democratic and Republican players who each took turns hugging him tightly and thanking him for protecting one of their own, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La.

"We are especially appreciative of the strong outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, friends, from across Louisiana and across the country, as well as President [Donald] Trump, Vice President [Mike] Pence and all of Steve's colleagues who have reached out during this challenging time", the statement said.

Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died. Democrats and Republicans each have won 39 times and tied once.

Scalise's surgeon says he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", despite being at risk of death when he arrived at the hospital.

Scalise, 51, and four others were wounded when an IL man opened fire Wednesday morning on the team practice in Alexandria.

Both Republican and Democratic leaders at the game encouraged a sense of unity in the wake of the shooting during an otherwise politically rancorous time in Washington when the parties are sharply divided over healthcare legislation and investigations of the members of the Trump administration. But she says he sold items from his business and told her he was going to Washington. James Hodgkinson had been a vocal opponent of the Republican party.

"We feel so deeply about the things that we fight for and the things we believe in. but we do not shed our humanity when we enter this chamber", Ryan said.

A recent Golovkin comment that Alvarez was acting "scared" brought a grin to Alvarez's face, and a reply of, "We'll see". Golovkin and Alvarez, who are in the midst of a multicity promotional tour, are on the same side of the issue.

The officer wound up having to jump on the hood of the driver's Mazda SUV to avoid being struck directly.

The arrest was first reported by CNN.

"I could tell it meant a lot to [Bailey] and for me it was the highlight of my night", Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., said.

Physicians said Friday that Scalise, R-La., has stabilized over the last two days following multiple surgeries that became necessary when he was hit in the shooting attack at a baseball field in Alexandria, Va., early Tuesday.

The FBI said it was investigating the shooter's "activities and social media impressions" in the months leading up to the attack.

Authorities also confirm Hodgkinson legally purchased a 9 mm handgun and an assault-style rifle from licensed firearms sellers.

The announcer's mention of Scalise, the House majority whip who was critically wounded in the attack Wednesday, brought the masses to their feet.

But the focus shifted after Scalise and four others were injured Wednesday when a gunman fired on the GOP congressional baseball team's early morning practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly. Hodgkinson had arrests in his background but showed required firearms licenses to an IL deputy who confronted him about shooting a cornfield last spring.
