The officers were the security accompanying Steve Scalise, the House majority whip, and other Members who were practicing at 7 a.m. for the annual Congressional baseball game scheduled for Thursday.
U.S. Capitol Police Officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner were identified by House Speaker Paul Ryan as the two officers injured in the shooting at a Congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.
President Donald Trump and other prominent Republicans are hailing two Black Capitol Hill police officers as heroes after the officers risked their lives to take down an IL gunman.
Officer Bailey came out on crutches at Nationals Park, yet still managed to throw out the first pitch.
Griner and Special Agent David Bailey engaged the gunman and shot him dead.
'She is incredible, and she's a hero, ' retired Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine tells CBS News. "One was being treated and one was about to go into surgery", Ryan said.
"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman".
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that Capitol Police get a bigger budget to offer protection to rank and file members, though she said she hadn't heard from rank-and-file members who felt the need to have protection around the clock.

The shooter has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old IL man who had in recent months been living out of his auto in the Alexandria area.
"These folks are heroes", said Rep.
Barton said in a statement, "The suspect was shooting at members and staff on the field". After an exchange of gunfire with police, the shooter died. "Steve Scalise is in leadership and that's the only reason there was security detail there at all. He said, 'I'm thirsty.' Obviously, you don't know how much fluid he may be losing internally".
"I know as sure as I'm standing here right now that there's no way we would have lived through that", Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Michigan, told "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley. "They ran right into the fire", Trump said.
Bailey has worked as a Capitol police officer for more than nine years, according to his LinkedIn page.
Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-Sc., and Rep. Ron Desantis, R-Fl., were getting into Duncan's auto when the man asked them about the political affiliation.
Fleischmann had been on the field with his back to the shooter when the rampage began, and dove into the dugout, huddling in place until the shots stopped.
