To many Americans, Memorial Day has lost its meaning

30 May 2017

If you're a bit hazy on the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, you're not alone. What is its history like? He said he encourages those who want to say supportive words to a veteran to recognize "that the person may have friends who died in combat".

Simply put, it is to honor those who died while serving in the military. but it is a little more complex than that. Typically known as Decoration Day for the practice of decorating the graves of the fallen, it was codified into federal law as Memorial Day in 1967.

The tradition of honoring fallen soldiers is an ancient one, and it came to be commonplace in the United States in the wake of the Civil War.

Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30.

Services of remembrance and honor will take place across the Greater Johnstown region.

According to historical accounts, in an expression of gratitude to those who died fighting against slavery, the freed slaves exhumed the bodies of more than 250 Union soldiers from a mass grave at a Confederate prison camp in Charleston, South Carolina, and gave them a proper burial.

Trump says 'ultimate deal' possible for peace in Middle East
But with determination, compromise and the belief that peace is possible, Israelis and Palestinians can make a deal", he said. Many American presidents have tried to get the Palestinians and Israelis together, but Trump knows he can do it.

But the holiday has lost its way; the day's original intent too often is obscured now, confused, or forgotten, as Memorial Day advocates have argued at the website and elsewhere.

Nathan volunteered with his father earlier this week to help place American flags on 500 acres of land ahead of Saturday morning's annual Memorial Day service at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. This dispute was settled in 1966 by President Lyndon Johnson and Congress, and was decided that the birthplace of Memorial Day was Waterloo, NY.

"This is my first Memorial Day service since I retired and I don't know why I haven't come, but this is really emotional for me today", said Al Quist who attended the ceremony. However, women's contributions in this sphere (like so many others), too often gets erased or overlooked, so we'd like to do our part to make sure that these courageous and selfless women get the recognition they deserve. Families get together, some may throw parties or barbecues or have picnics.

We're lucky here, for many reasons, and one is that the North Fork hasn't forgotten what the day signifies at this crossroad of the seasons.

Some may even visit the graves of family members, or even decorate the graves of strangers if they choose. So which holiday is this one? For example, Armed Forces Day is a day specifically dedicated for citizens to thank service members for their service.
