Fallen police officers honored during ceremony outside NH statehouse

Each year around this time, we recognize National Police Week, in order to honor the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting their communities.

A cold rain fell on Madison Friday, as three names were added afternoon to the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial outside the state Capitol building.

The names of 34 Oklahoma City officers were read aloud during a service at the Oklahoma City Police Department headquarters. "We must not take those sacrifices for granted", he said.

Since 1887, 87 federal, state and local law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in Erie County. The recent passing of Navajo Police Officer Houston J. Largo from the Crownpoint District shook the Navajo Nation.

The event was part of National Police Week.

Darren Cruzan, Acting Director for the Department of Interior Law Enforcement Services, provided opening remarks on behalf of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and Deputy Assistant Secretrary James Cason.

In 2016, 42 percent of automobile fatalities in North Carolina were drivers or passengers who were not wearing their seat belt. Numerous extra officers will be out during this period and enforcement of these violations will be strict.

The objective of this week is to honor and pay tribute to honor those who have worn the law enforcement badge and lost their lives in the line of duty, Cruzan said.

"This network provides the means of quickly identifying, pursuing and capturing violent offenders who have hurt, killed or pose an imminent danger to law enforcement", said Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a statement.

His mother Karen, family and friends joined the families of 394 other fallen officers who were honored. "Not only to us but to their incredible families". "And it's important for the communities to embrace their officers, to support their officers".

H.R. 1309, Probation Officer Protection Act of 2017- This bill protects our probation officers by giving them the ability to arrest a person if there is probable cause, during the performance of their official duties. "We must honor the legacy of the fearless men and women who gave their lives in the effort to serve and protect". A previous memorial, now defunct, was at the former tribal police academy in Toyei, Arizona.

Nationally, during 2016, 135 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty.
