Tennessee teacher planned to take 15-year-old girl to Mexico

The U.S. Attorney's Office charges Cummins began a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student, lied about it, stole his wife's auto, and took the girl to Siskyiou County in northern California.

Authorities found Cummins and Elizabeth in a cabin in Cecilville, Calif. - a remote area with no cell phone reception - on Thursday.

He didn't say a word aloud and listened intently to Magistrate Judge Kendall Newman.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said it worked tirelessly for the past five weeks, looking into more than 1,500 leads from all 50 states.

He was hoping to take her to Mexico, court documents say, even using a small watercraft for "a test run".

Cummins, who appeared at an arraignment in Sacamento, walked into court wearing an orange prison jumpsuit that said "Sac Co prisoner" and he was shackled with a chain around his waist. She has returned home and is being treated by a team of therapists.

For his own safety reasons, federal authorities would not disclose what day Cummins will depart California or when he will arrive in Tennessee.

According to a criminal affidavit filed in support of Cummins' arrest warrant, Tennessee investigators said Cummins - who'd already been suspended by Culleoka Unit School for disobeying orders to steer clear of Elizabeth - stole his wife's auto on March 13, falsely told her he was going to Virginia to "clear his head" and asked her to forgive him.

In an earlier interview Monday with CNN, Elizabeth's sister-in-law, Danielle Thomas, said Elizabeth may have thought she and Cummins were going on a one-day excursion and didn't anticipate leaving for more than a month and traveling more than 2,000 miles away.

"It is important to note that these allegations do not involve force, threats, or coercion of any sort", Galloway said in an email to Reuters.

The Tennessee teacher was arrested Thursday and the teen was recovered in Northern California after a nationwide search.

Cummins, who was the girl's teacher before being fired from his high school, is charged with taking a minor across states lines to have sex.

Cummins has since been charged with transporting a minor across state lines for the goal of criminal sexual intercourse. "One minutes he's happy and the same Mary Catherine that you knew before all this and then she's shaking or curled up in the fetal position crying".
